Answer by Deuzer from Michigan
In the Midwest, curtain-side trailers typically feature a soft material that slides along a rigid frame that roughly outlines the box shape of the more common van style freight trailers. The more advanced models have sliding side supports, to accomodate the loading and unloading of various sizes of freight.
They typically carry a wheeled forklift "donkey," or "piggyback" on the back of the trailer, which is used for unloading. These trailers, then, do not require a truck dock for loading or unloading, making them very practical for getting into otherwise difficult delivery destinations.
Ours was custom-built in Haslett, Michigan (near Lansing), by Sliding Systems (517-339-1455) www.slidingsystems.com. They did a great job and would be good folks to talk to about your particular requirements. Good luck!
